Short answer: no. As of October 2026, retatrutide is not approved anywhere in the world, including the United States and Canada. Eli Lilly says it plans to submit it to the US FDA in the first quarter of 2027, later than the end-2026 target it had given earlier. It has not yet appeared on Health Canada’s list of drug submissions under review. Based on how long reviews normally take, a realistic US decision is around late 2027 to 2028, and Canada usually follows. But there is a twist most articles miss: in Canada, “approved” and “at your pharmacy” can be years apart.
Search interest in retatrutide in Canada has nearly tripled over the past year, according to Google Trends, and one of the fastest-rising searches is simply “retatrutide FDA approval.” Google’s suggestions tell the same story: is retatrutide FDA approved, is retatrutide available in Canada, when will retatrutide be available. Here is the most complete answer we can give, with every date sourced.

Where retatrutide stands today
| United States (FDA) | Not approved. Not yet submitted. Lilly plans to submit in Q1 2027. |
|---|---|
| Canada (Health Canada) | Not approved. Not on Health Canada’s public list of new drug submissions under review (list current to August 31, 2026). |
| Rest of the world | Not approved anywhere. Lilly describes it as investigational and legally available only in clinical trials. |
| Compounding (US) | Not permitted. The FDA states retatrutide cannot be used in compounding under federal law. |
| Health Canada enforcement | Named in Health Canada’s public advisories on unauthorized injectable peptides, most recently April 9, 2026. |
Interesting detail: Lilly’s other new obesity-class drug, the oral pill orforglipron, is on Health Canada’s under-review list, accepted in January 2026. So Lilly is clearly filing in Canada. Retatrutide just is not there yet.
Why Lilly pushed the filing to 2027
On July 23, 2026, alongside new phase 3 results, Lilly said it is completing the Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) package needed for the application and now plans to submit in Q1 2027. Earlier, the company had signalled a possible submission before the end of 2026.
CMC is the part of an application that proves a company can manufacture the drug consistently, at scale, to a defined quality standard. It has nothing to do with whether the drug works. The clinical data is strong: retatrutide has now succeeded in several phase 3 trials. The delay is about the factory, not the science.
Why that matters to you: the very thing slowing down the real drug, proving consistent manufacturing quality, is exactly the thing nobody checks for vials sold online. Keep that in mind when you read the section on what “available” means.
The realistic timeline, step by step
Nobody outside Lilly and the regulators knows the exact dates. But the review process follows published rules, so we can estimate the range:
| Step | Typical length | Retatrutide estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Lilly submits to FDA | n/a | Q1 2027 (company guidance) |
| FDA accepts filing | ~60 days | Q2 2027 |
| FDA review: priority | ~8 months from submission | Late 2027 |
| FDA review: standard | ~12 months from submission | Early 2028 |
| Health Canada submission | Often within months of the US | 2027 (not yet announced) |
| Health Canada standard review | 300-day target after screening | Decision 2028 at the earliest |
Two caveats. First, FDA reviews can be extended if questions come up, especially on manufacturing. Second, the US government has introduced fast-track voucher programs in recent years, and if retatrutide received one, the US review could be much shorter. Lilly has not said that it has.
Canada: approval is not availability
This is the part Canadians should pay attention to. When a drug is approved by Health Canada, it does not mean you can fill a prescription for it the next week. Look at what happened with semaglutide for weight loss:
| Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg) | Date |
|---|---|
| FDA approval (US) | June 2021 |
| Health Canada approval | November 2021 |
| Actually available in Canadian pharmacies | May 2024 |
Health Canada moved quickly, about five months after the FDA. But because of global supply shortages, Wegovy did not reach Canadian pharmacies for roughly two and a half years after approval. Retatrutide is likely to face its own launch constraints, especially since manufacturing capacity is exactly what Lilly is still documenting.
And after availability comes coverage. Provincial drug plans and private insurers make their own decisions, often months or years later. Many Canadians on newer obesity drugs still pay out of pocket.
What regulators will be looking at
The efficacy story is strong. Here are the headline phase 3 results Lilly has reported (efficacy estimand, versus placebo):
| Trial | Population | Length | Top-dose weight loss | Placebo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TRIUMPH-4 | Obesity + knee osteoarthritis | 68 weeks | 28.7% (12 mg) | 2.1% |
| TRIUMPH-1 | Obesity | 80 weeks | 28.3% (12 mg) | not stated in release |
| TRIUMPH-3 | Severe obesity + cardiovascular disease | 80 weeks | 22.6% (12 mg) | 3.2% |
| TRIUMPH-2 | Obesity + type 2 diabetes | 80 weeks | 20.8% (12 mg) | 4.0% |
| TRANSCEND-T2D-1 | Type 2 diabetes | 40 weeks | 16.8% (12 mg) | not stated in release |
Regulators will weigh that against the safety picture, which we covered in detail in Is retatrutide safe? The points most likely to get scrutiny:
- Dysesthesia, abnormal skin sensations reported far more often than on placebo and not typical of older drugs in the class.
- Discontinuation due to side effects, which rose at the highest dose.
- Cardiovascular outcomes. In TRIUMPH-3, the cardiovascular event analyses had confidence intervals crossing 1.0 because fewer events occurred than expected, so the trial could not show a clear benefit or harm. A dedicated outcomes trial is still running.
- Manufacturing (CMC), the reason for the delay.
What “available online” actually means
Search “retatrutide Canada” and you will find plenty of sellers. Here is what you need to understand about every one of them, including TrueLabs:
- None of them sells Lilly’s retatrutide. Lilly does not sell it outside clinical trials.
- What they sell is a research chemical: a synthesized peptide intended to match retatrutide’s sequence, for laboratory use only.
- The trial data above was produced by Lilly’s pharmaceutical product, made under GMP conditions. It does not transfer to a research vial.
- Health Canada has stated that “research use only” labelling does not make a product legal for human use or exempt it from drug regulations.
For laboratory work, that is why identity and purity documentation matters so much: mass spectrometry confirming the molecular weight, HPLC purity, and a COA matched to the lot. See 10 retatrutide mistakes to avoid for what to check.
If you are asking for yourself: semaglutide and tirzepatide are approved in Canada today, with years of real-world safety data, and orforglipron is under Health Canada review. A doctor can tell you whether any of them fit, and whether a retatrutide clinical trial might be an option. ClinicalTrials.gov lists recruiting sites.

Frequently asked questions
Cliquez sur une question pour afficher la réponse.
Is retatrutide FDA approved?
No. As of October 2026, retatrutide is not approved by the FDA or any other regulator. Lilly plans to submit it to the FDA in the first quarter of 2027.
Is retatrutide available in Canada?
Not as an approved medicine. It is not on Health Canada’s list of submissions under review as of August 31, 2026. It is only legally available through clinical trials.
When will retatrutide be approved?
Based on a Q1 2027 US submission and standard review times, a US decision is plausible between late 2027 and 2028. A Health Canada decision would most likely come in 2028 or later.
Why was the retatrutide filing delayed?
Lilly said in July 2026 that it is completing the Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) data package, which documents how the drug is manufactured to a consistent quality.
When will retatrutide be in Canadian pharmacies?
Possibly well after approval. Wegovy was approved by Health Canada in November 2021 but only reached Canadian pharmacies in May 2024 because of supply limits.
Is retatrutide the same as Ozempic?
No. Ozempic (semaglutide) activates one hormone receptor, GLP-1. Retatrutide activates three: GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. See our full comparison.
