Epithalon is a four-amino-acid peptide developed by Prof. Vladimir Khavinson’s group in St. Petersburg as a synthetic version of the active component of epithalamin, an extract of the pineal gland. It is one of the most discussed peptides in longevity research because of its reported effects on telomerase, the enzyme that maintains the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes.
Khavinson et al. (2003, Bull Exp Biol Med) reported that Epithalon induced telomerase activity and telomere elongation in cultured human somatic cells, allowing them to pass their normal division limit.
Studies in aged animals examined melatonin secretion and circadian rhythm markers.
Most of the literature comes from a single research group and has not been widely replicated, which researchers should weigh when designing studies.
