MOTS-C is a mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded by the 12S rRNA gene of the mitochondrial genome. Its discovery represented a paradigm shift in our understanding of mitochondria as signaling organelles capable of communicating with the nucleus to regulate metabolism.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
MOTS-C translocates to the nucleus under metabolic stress and regulates adaptive gene expression. It activates AMPK signaling, enhances insulin sensitivity, and promotes fatty acid oxidation.
