Melanotan II was developed at the University of Arizona in the 1980s and 1990s as a stable, cyclic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Unlike the linear Melanotan I, it activates several melanocortin receptors, which is why it is studied across pigmentation, appetite and sexual-function pathways.
Health Canada has warned consumers against unauthorized melanotan tanning products. TrueLabs MT2 is sold strictly as a laboratory research compound.
Early University of Arizona studies examined MC1R-driven pigmentation.
Its MC4R activity led to the development of PT-141 (bremelanotide), a metabolite-derived analogue later developed as a prescription drug.
