KPV is the last three amino acids of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), the part of the hormone that carries much of its anti-inflammatory activity. Because it lacks the rest of the sequence, it does not drive the pigmentation effects associated with α-MSH, which makes it a clean tool for inflammation research.
Dalmasso et al. (2008, Gastroenterology) reported that KPV is transported into intestinal cells by the PepT1 transporter and reduced inflammation in mouse colitis models.
Cell studies report reduced NF-κB activation and lower pro-inflammatory cytokine release in epithelial and immune cells.
