Melanotan I is a linear analogue of alpha-MSH with two substitutions that make it far more stable and potent at the MC1 receptor, the main driver of melanin production. Under the name afamelanotide it was developed into an approved medicine in Europe and the United States for a rare photosensitivity disorder.
Studied as a selective tool for eumelanin production and photoprotection pathways.
Trials in erythropoietic protoporphyria supported regulatory approval for that indication.
Honest caveat: the findings above come from published laboratory and preclinical research, or from clinical studies of the compound class. They describe what has been studied, not what this product will do.
