The needle is finally optional. In December 2025 the FDA approved an oral version of Wegovy — a 25 mg once-daily semaglutide pill — the first GLP-1 pill approved specifically for weight loss. In its OASIS-4 trial it produced about 16.6% weight loss over 64 weeks, comparable to the injection.
The catch for Canadians: it is not approved here yet. Novo Nordisk has applied to Health Canada and the decision is pending. Here is how the pill works, why the dose is so much bigger than the shot, and where things stand.

What oral Wegovy is
Oral Wegovy is semaglutide — the same molecule in the Wegovy injection and in Ozempic — formulated as a once-daily tablet for weight management. The FDA approved it on December 22, 2025, making it the first GLP-1 pill cleared specifically for weight loss, with a U.S. launch expected in early January 2026.
Until now, the most effective weight-loss drugs were all injections. A pill removes the single biggest psychological barrier for a lot of people: the needle. That is why this approval got so much attention even though the drug inside is not new.
The molecule isn’t new. What’s new is that you can swallow it — and for a lot of people, the needle was the dealbreaker. Why an oral GLP-1 matters
Oral Wegovy vs Rybelsus
This trips people up, because there was already an oral semaglutide: Rybelsus. The difference is dose and purpose.
- Rybelsus is oral semaglutide approved for type 2 diabetes, at doses up to 14 mg. Its weight-loss effect is modest compared with the Wegovy injection.
- Oral Wegovy is a higher-dose oral semaglutide (25 mg) approved specifically for weight management, designed to match the injection’s weight-loss performance.
So both are “semaglutide pills,” but oral Wegovy is the higher-dose, weight-loss-focused one. Semaglutide in all its forms is covered in Sevmia and generic Wegovy in Canada.
What the trial showed
The approval rested on the OASIS-4 trial.
- Weight loss: about 16.6% on average over 64 weeks.
- Depth of response: roughly one in three participants reached at least 20% weight loss.
- Benchmark: the result is described as comparable to injectable Wegovy — which is the whole point. A pill that matches the shot is the breakthrough.
In other words, oral Wegovy is not trying to out-perform the injection; it is trying to deliver the same result without the needle.
Why the pill dose is so much higher
Here is a detail that surprises people: the injection is dosed at 2.4 mg, but the pill is 25 mg — about ten times more. That is not because the pill is stronger. It is because peptides like semaglutide are very poorly absorbed when swallowed. Stomach acid and digestive enzymes destroy most of the dose, and only a small fraction crosses into the bloodstream.
To land the same amount of active drug in your system, an oral formulation has to start with far more. The science of getting a peptide to survive the gut and absorb at all is genuinely hard — it is the reason effective GLP-1 pills took so long to arrive. For the broader picture of oral versus injected peptides, see BPC-157 oral vs injectable.
Pill vs injection
If the weight loss is comparable, how do you choose? The trade-offs are mostly about lifestyle, not efficacy.
| Oral Wegovy (pill) | Wegovy (injection) | |
|---|---|---|
| How often | Once daily | Once weekly |
| Needle | No | Yes |
| Weight loss | ~16.6% (OASIS-4) | Comparable |
| Taking it | Daily routine, often with food/water rules | One injection a week, no daily step |
The pill trades a weekly needle for a daily tablet. For needle-averse people that is a clear win; for others, a once-weekly shot is simpler than remembering a daily pill with timing rules. There is no universally “better” option — it depends on the person.
When Canada gets it
As of October 2026, oral Wegovy is not approved in Canada. Novo Nordisk Canada has applied to Health Canada and is awaiting a decision; there is no confirmed Canadian approval date. The FDA approval and U.S. launch do not carry over to Canada — Health Canada reviews independently.
So for now, Canadians cannot fill a prescription for the semaglutide weight-loss pill. What is available and getting cheaper is injectable semaglutide, including new generics — see generic Ozempic in Canada. As always, approved products come through a clinician; unauthorized injectable peptides sold online are illegal in Canada, and a research-use label gives no exemption.
Myths
“Myth: The pill is weaker than the shot.”
In its trial, oral Wegovy produced weight loss comparable to the injection (~16.6%). It is dosed higher precisely so it can match the shot despite poor oral absorption.
“Myth: Rybelsus and oral Wegovy are the same.”
Both are oral semaglutide, but Rybelsus is a lower-dose diabetes product (up to 14 mg) with modest weight effect, while oral Wegovy is a 25 mg weight-management product designed to match the injection.
“Myth: Because the FDA approved it, I can get it in Canada.”
No. Health Canada reviews separately, and as of October 2026 oral Wegovy is not approved here. Novo Nordisk’s application is pending.
“Myth: A 25 mg pill means 10x the drug effect of the 2.4 mg shot.”
No — the higher number compensates for how little of a swallowed peptide actually absorbs. The amount reaching your bloodstream is designed to be comparable, not ten times greater.
For researchers
TrueLabs does not sell semaglutide or any human medicine. It supplies research-grade reference peptides in CAD, for in vitro and laboratory research only, never for human or veterinary use, including next-generation metabolic compounds such as RT3 (retatrutide) from $90 and TZ-2 (tirzepatide) from $73. For how oral versus injectable delivery changes a peptide’s behaviour, see BPC-157 oral vs injectable, and check documentation via how to read a peptide COA.
FAQ
Tap a question to reveal the answer.
Is there a Wegovy pill?
Yes. The FDA approved an oral version of Wegovy — a 25 mg once-daily semaglutide tablet for weight management — on December 22, 2025, the first GLP-1 pill approved specifically for weight loss. A U.S. launch was expected in early January 2026.
How much weight loss does oral Wegovy produce?
About 16.6% on average over 64 weeks in the OASIS-4 trial, with roughly one in three participants reaching at least 20% weight loss — comparable to the Wegovy injection.
Is oral Wegovy available in Canada?
Not as of October 2026. Novo Nordisk Canada has applied to Health Canada and the decision is pending. The FDA approval does not carry over; Health Canada reviews independently.
What is the difference between oral Wegovy and Rybelsus?
Both are oral semaglutide. Rybelsus is a lower-dose product (up to 14 mg) for type 2 diabetes with a modest weight effect. Oral Wegovy is a 25 mg weight-management product designed to match the injection’s weight loss.
Why is the pill 25 mg when the injection is only 2.4 mg?
Because peptides absorb poorly when swallowed — most of an oral dose is destroyed in the gut. The higher number compensates so that a comparable amount of active drug reaches the bloodstream.
Is the pill as good as the injection?
On weight loss, the trial result was comparable. The real difference is convenience: a daily pill with no needle versus a once-weekly injection. Which is better depends on personal preference.
Does oral Wegovy have different side effects?
It shares the same class of gastrointestinal effects as other semaglutide products — nausea, vomiting, diarrhea — usually worst during dose increases. A prescriber reviews suitability; this is not medical advice.
Can I buy a semaglutide pill online for weight loss?
Only an approved product through a legitimate prescription is legal and safe. Unauthorized semaglutide sold online is illegal in Canada, and in any case the approved oral weight-loss pill is not yet available here.
