Selank was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It extends tuftsin, a naturally occurring immunomodulatory tetrapeptide, with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail that makes it more stable. It is studied as a neuropeptide in anxiety and stress models and is registered as a medicine in Russia, but not in Canada.
Rodent studies report anxiolytic-like behaviour without the sedation associated with benzodiazepines, with proposed effects on GABAergic signalling and monoamines.
Work from the same institute reported changes in expression of genes involved in neurotransmission and inflammatory cytokines.
