Semax combines a short fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) with the same stabilizing Pro-Gly-Pro tail used in Selank. The ACTH fragment carries neuroactive properties without hormonal activity on the adrenal glands. It was developed in Russia, where it is registered as a medicine, and is studied in cognition and neuroprotection research.
Dolotov et al. (2006, Brain Res) reported that Semax increased BDNF levels and TrkB receptor activity in the rat hippocampus.
