Kisspeptin is the master switch of human reproduction — the hormone sitting at the very top of the chain that tells your body to make sex hormones. Without it, puberty never starts. That central role is why researchers are so interested in it for two things: low sex drive and fertility.
Studies from Imperial College London found that giving kisspeptin boosted brain activity in sexual and emotional regions in both men and women, and it is being explored as a gentler way to trigger ovulation in IVF. It is early, unapproved research — but genuinely promising. Here is what the evidence shows.

What kisspeptin is
Kisspeptin is a signalling peptide, encoded by the KISS1 gene, that acts through a receptor called GPR54. It is the upstream trigger of the entire reproductive hormone axis: people who lack working kisspeptin signalling do not go through puberty. That makes it fundamentally different from the hormones further down the chain — it is the switch, not the output. For how it compares to the other reproductive peptides, see kisspeptin vs HCG vs PT-141.
Kisspeptin sits at the top of the reproductive chain — the hormone that starts puberty itself. Researchers are asking what happens when you nudge the master switch in adults. Why kisspeptin is the one to watch in reproductive research
How it works
Kisspeptin stimulates neurons in the hypothalamus to release GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone). GnRH tells the pituitary to release LH and FSH, which in turn tell the testes or ovaries to produce testosterone, estrogen and to drive ovulation or sperm production. Because kisspeptin acts at the very top, it switches on the whole natural cascade rather than overriding it — a key reason researchers find it appealing compared with directly dosing downstream hormones.
The libido research
This is where kisspeptin captured headlines. Research teams at Imperial College London administered kisspeptin to men and to women with low sexual desire and used brain imaging to see what happened. They reported that kisspeptin enhanced activity in brain regions tied to sexual arousal and emotion, and improved sexual responses, suggesting potential as a treatment for low sex drive in both sexes. It is early-stage work — not an approved therapy — but it points at a genuinely novel, upstream approach to desire, distinct from both Viagra (vascular) and PT-141 (melanocortin).
The fertility research
The second major research avenue is fertility. In IVF, a hormone surge is needed to mature eggs before collection, and the standard trigger can cause a dangerous complication called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Because kisspeptin triggers a more natural, self-limiting hormone surge, it has been studied as a gentler IVF trigger that may lower OHSS risk. It has also been investigated in conditions of disrupted reproductive signalling, such as hypothalamic amenorrhea. Again: promising research directions, not approved treatments.
Testosterone and hormones
Because kisspeptin drives LH and FSH, it raises the downstream sex hormones — including testosterone in men — by switching on the body’s own production rather than replacing it. That is conceptually attractive compared with exogenous testosterone, which can suppress natural production and fertility. But the research here is early and does not make kisspeptin an approved or established testosterone therapy. For the broader male-hormone picture, see low testosterone in Canada.
Kisspeptin vs HCG vs PT-141
| Kisspeptin | HCG | PT-141 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acts at | Top of axis (hypothalamus) | Mimics LH (downstream) | Brain melanocortin (desire) |
| Main research use | Libido, fertility | Testosterone, fertility | Sexual desire |
| Approach | Switches on natural cascade | Replaces a downstream signal | Central arousal |
Kisspeptin is not an approved treatment for low libido, fertility or anything else, and injectable peptides are regulated as prescription drugs in Canada. The research is early-stage. TrueLabs sells kisspeptin for in vitro and laboratory research only; this article is not medical advice or dosing guidance.
For researchers
TrueLabs supplies Kisspeptin from $34, HCG from $24 and PT-141 from $45 — the main reproductive and sexual-function research peptides — in CAD for in vitro and laboratory research only. Before ordering, see how to read a peptide COA and the COA library.
Kisspeptin myths
“Myth: Kisspeptin is an approved libido drug.”
No. The sexual-desire research is early-stage and promising, but there is no approved kisspeptin therapy.
“Myth: It is just like testosterone.”
It works at the top of the axis to switch on natural production, rather than replacing a hormone the way exogenous testosterone does.
“Myth: It is a proven fertility treatment.”
It is studied as a potentially gentler IVF trigger and in reproductive disorders, but it is not an approved fertility treatment.
“Myth: Research kisspeptin can be used to self-treat.”
It is an unapproved raw compound for lab use, not a treatment, and not formulated or dosed for people.
FAQ
Tap a question to reveal the answer.
What are the benefits of kisspeptin?
In research it is studied for boosting sexual desire in men and women and for driving a natural reproductive hormone surge useful in fertility. These are early-stage findings, not approved uses.
Does kisspeptin increase libido?
Imperial College studies reported that kisspeptin enhanced brain activity in sexual and emotional regions and improved sexual responses in men and women. It is promising but unapproved.
How does kisspeptin work?
It acts at the top of the reproductive axis, stimulating GnRH release, which triggers LH and FSH and then testosterone, estrogen, ovulation and sperm production.
Can kisspeptin help fertility?
It is studied as a gentler IVF trigger that may reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation, and in disorders of reproductive signalling. It is not an approved fertility treatment.
Does kisspeptin raise testosterone?
By driving LH and FSH, it raises the body’s own sex-hormone production, including testosterone, rather than replacing it. The research is early.
How is kisspeptin different from HCG?
HCG mimics LH downstream; kisspeptin acts at the very top of the axis, switching on the whole natural cascade.
Is kisspeptin safe?
It has been given in research settings, but it is not an approved drug and long-term safety in these uses is not established. Injectable peptides are prescription-regulated in Canada.
Is research kisspeptin a treatment?
No. It is a raw compound for laboratory study, not an approved treatment for libido, fertility or hormones.
