Short answer: HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is not an experimental peptide; it is a prescription hormone used for decades in fertility treatment and certain hormone conditions, and its side effects are well documented on drug labels. In men, the main ones are headache, irritability, fluid retention and breast tissue growth (gynecomastia), driven by higher testosterone and estrogen. In women, the serious one is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Labels also warn about blood clots. Here is what the labels say, and why HCG is not a weight-loss drug.
What HCG is and what it is approved for
HCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy (it is what pregnancy tests detect). It acts on the same receptor as LH: in men it signals the testes to make testosterone and supports sperm production; in women it triggers ovulation. Approved prescription products (urine-derived and recombinant) are used for ovulation induction in IVF, some cases of male hypogonadism, and undescended testes in boys. For how it compares with kisspeptin, which works further upstream, see kisspeptin vs HCG vs PT-141.
Side effects in men
| Effect | Why it happens |
|---|---|
| Gynecomastia (breast tissue growth) | More testosterone means more conversion to estrogen |
| Fluid retention, swelling | Sex-hormone effect; labels advise caution in heart or kidney disease |
| Headache, irritability, restlessness, mood changes, fatigue | Listed on HCG labels |
| Injection-site pain | Local reaction |
| Blood clots | Labels warn of arterial thromboembolism |
Side effects in women
- Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Enlarged ovaries and fluid shifts; in severe cases, fluid in the abdomen and lungs and a risk of blood clots. This is why HCG is given under fertility-clinic monitoring.
- Multiple pregnancy when used for ovulation induction.
- Ovarian cyst rupture, abdominal pain and bloating.
The HCG diet myth
Not a weight-loss drug: the “HCG diet” pairs injections with a very low-calorie diet (often 500 calories a day). Controlled trials found the weight loss came from the calorie restriction, not the HCG. US labels state HCG has not been shown to be effective for weight reduction, and the FDA has acted against over-the-counter “homeopathic” HCG diet products.
| Health Canada | HCG is a prescription drug in Canada. HCG sold online as a research product is unauthorized and was among products named in Health Canada’s April 2026 advisory. |

| WADA | Prohibited in men at all times under S2. |

Cliquez sur une question pour afficher la réponse.
What are the side effects of HCG in men?
Drug labels list headache, irritability, restlessness, mood changes, fatigue, fluid retention, injection-site pain and gynecomastia, plus a warning about blood clots.
Can HCG cause gynecomastia?
Yes. HCG raises testosterone, part of which converts to estrogen, which can stimulate breast tissue growth in men.
What are the risks of HCG for women?
The main serious risk is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, along with multiple pregnancy and ovarian cyst rupture when used for ovulation induction.
Does HCG help with weight loss?
No. Controlled trials found the weight loss in “HCG diets” comes from severe calorie restriction, and labels state HCG has not been shown to be effective for weight reduction.
Is HCG banned in sport?
Yes. WADA prohibits HCG in men at all times.
