Kisspeptins are peptides encoded by the KISS1 gene. In 2003, two groups showed that mutations in their receptor, GPR54, prevent puberty, revealing kisspeptin as the master upstream switch for gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Kisspeptin-10 carries the full receptor-activating sequence of the larger forms.
Dhillo et al. (2005, J Clin Endocrinol Metab) reported that kisspeptin administration potently stimulated LH and testosterone release in healthy men.
Kisspeptin is now a standard tool for studying puberty onset, the menstrual cycle and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.
